I'm Neville Hobson. I write, podcast, and explore ideas about communication, technology, leadership, and how they intersect.
I've spent much of my professional life working in organisational communication and exploring emerging technologies. Those experiences continue to shape how I see the world, particularly the growing influence of AI on organisations, society, and how we relate to one another.
These days, I'm less concerned with defining myself through professional roles and more interested in following my curiosity, exchanging ideas and making time for the people and things that matter to me.
Studio6 is my online home for those explorations – a place to share perspectives, question assumptions and reflect on a changing world.
A place to think, write and explore
In autumn 2024, my wife and I moved to South Somerset, exchanging urban life for a quieter rural setting. One of the most rewarding parts of that move was establishing a garden studio – a space where I can write, record podcasts, experiment with technology and occasionally just sit and think.
That's Studio6. It's both a physical place and the name of this blog.
Here, I follow ideas that interest me, often at the intersection of communication, technology and society. Artificial intelligence is a particular fascination, not simply because of what the technology can do, but because of the questions it raises about trust, responsibility, leadership and what it means to be human in an increasingly digital world.
I'm interested in how people communicate, how organisations behave, how technology changes our expectations, and how we make sense of it all.
Sometimes that means exploring a new digital platform or experimenting with an AI tool. Other times, it means reflecting on a conversation, an event, or something I've read that challenges my assumptions.
I don't pretend to have all the answers. Much of the pleasure comes from asking questions, considering different perspectives and seeing where the conversation leads.
A little background
Communication and technology have been recurring threads throughout my professional life.
I've worked across organisational communication, public relations, and digital transformation, and I've seen firsthand the profound changes technology has brought to how organisations communicate, and people connect.
I've also been blogging since the early days of the medium and podcasting since 2005, when Shel Holtz and I began co-hosting For Immediate Release, a podcast about communication, technology and the changing world of organisational communication.
Both writing and podcasting have given me opportunities to learn from others, challenge my own thinking and take part in conversations that continue to interest me.
That experience remains part of who I am. But it's a foundation for what interests me today, rather than a definition of what I should be doing tomorrow.
Beyond the screen
Moving to Somerset was about more than a change of address. It was part of a broader desire to live more intentionally, with more room for family, creativity, reflection and the simple pleasure of having time to explore an idea without needing to turn it into something productive.
I still enjoy experimenting with technology and keeping up with a rapidly changing world. But I also appreciate the value of stepping away from the screen, spending time with family, especially my grandchildren, and enjoying the quieter rhythms of life in this part of England.
I'm increasingly drawn to the idea that technology should serve our lives, not dictate their pace.
Why this blog?
Because curiosity doesn't stop.
My previous blog, which I started in 2002, is now an archive of more than 20 years of writing, observations and conversations. Studio6 is where those explorations continue, informed by everything I've learned along the way and by the things that catch my attention today.
You'll find thoughts on communication, AI, leadership, digital culture and the changing relationship between people and technology. Occasionally, I'll wander into other territory entirely.
There's no grand editorial agenda or obligation to chase the latest trend. I write about things I find interesting, important, surprising or worth discussing.
And if something I write encourages you to think differently, question an assumption or join the conversation, so much the better.
